IARC hazard groups
1
KNOWN CANCER HAZARD
The evidence supports that the agent can cause cancer in humans. This does not quantify the risk from a particular dose.
2A
MAY CAUSE CANCER
Higher evidentiary certainty than Group 2B, but not the same as a measured probability that an individual will develop cancer.
2B
POSSIBLE HAZARD
Evidence is more limited. The app preserves qualifiers such as “whole leaf extract” or “traditional Asian” instead of collapsing them into broad terms such as “aloe” or “pickles.”
3
NO HAZARD IDENTIFIED
Group 3 means available evidence does not permit a carcinogenicity classification.
OK
NO HAZARD IDENTIFIED
Used when readable product data is available and no Group 1/2A/2B rule matches. It is not a claim that cancer is impossible.
Important distinction
IARC classifies carcinogenic hazard — whether an exposure can cause cancer under some circumstances. It does not rank ordinary consumer products by dose-specific cancer risk.
Classification database reference: IARC Monographs, Volumes 1–142. Product data is retrieved from Open Food Facts / Open Beauty Facts / Open Products Facts when available.
